Paper 1: Convincing20% (46 pgs + Works Cited)

Convincing Essay Assignment

Purpose:

The purpose of this essay is to convince your audience to agree with your point of view on an issue. The key difference between a convincing and a persuading essay is that authors argue to convince in order to primarily contact the minds of your audience, to get them to agree with you on an intellectual level. There’s quite a gap between intellectual agreement and truly moving people to act, which will be the purpose of the persuading essay. So, this essay will consist mostly of what appeals to the mind–logic and researched evidence.

Subject:

An issue raised in the first full season of The Wire.

Audience:

Audience is a crucial consideration in the convincing essay.

Your audience must need to be convinced of whatever stand you take. If they all already agree with you, there’s not much point in making an argument in the first place. Several things that you may need to know about your audienceinclude:

how much they already know about your subject

if they already have preconceptions about your subject

they should have some stake in the issue (or you should be able to convince them of this)

their general beliefs and values

demographic information, such as income, age, education, race/gender (if applicable), political leanings, etc.

their potential reactions to your claim

Focus:

The focus of the essay should be your stand and why it’s the right one. The essay should be focused on a clear thesis, several clear reasons, and evidence for each reason–all determined by the needs of your audience. All of this, too, we said, should be clearly set up within the first few paragraphs of your essay, and the connections continually explained throughout so your reader knows how everything fits together.

Development:

The more hostile your audience, the more development (at least in terms of evidence) you’ll need. Sources you use should be specific and relevant and ones that your audience would find credible. As a general guideline, think about two to three outside sources as a minimum number for this essay. The sources should be scholarly – as in, peer-reviewed, published in an academic journal or book. Avoid .com and .net websites, newspapers, magazines, and blogs. If you must use online sources, choose those ending in .org, .gov, and .edu. Potential sources for information include but are not limited to:

statistical info

sample cases

quotes/paraphrases from credible, scholarly sources

Coherence:

The essay needs a very clear logical progression between reasons with no serious gaps. The essay should flow smoothly as it moves from your basic statement of point-of-view to your audience. You need an excellent understanding of your own point of view before you begin to write. Avoid confusing structure, tangents, abstract evidence, logical errors, lack of evidence to demonstrate your points, writing over (or under) the heads of your audience in terms of vocabulary, and stylistic or editing errors.

Make a strong case to get your readers to agree with you. Meet the length requirement and find appropriate secondary sources.

Discussion on Net Neutrality

Net Neutrality

Click on this link to watch a video explaining Net Neutrality. You will need to do some additional research to answer the following questions. Click here for another resource about the “hot topic”. or find an article on your own. Best if completed by Saturday of the week.

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted 3-2 on February 26, 2015 to approve reclassifying fixed and wireless Internet service providers (ISPs) as telecommunications providers, not information services. That means ISPs will now be regulated, similar to phone companies, under much stronger legal authority granted by the Telecommunications Act of 1996. A lot has changed since then. Complete the following:

  • What is “net neutrality?”
  • Summarize your article
  • What major groups are in favor of this reclassification?
  • What major groups are not in favor of this reclassification?
  • How will the current laws affect individuals, businesses, and the country as a whole?
  • Remember to cite your reference at the end and include a matching in-text citation. (See my example below). Use 3rd person (no I, we, you, etc.
  • Use Netiquette and proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. APA format require

Write a Case Study Based on the Given Standard

506 Final Project: Case Study

For your final project, you will write a 6-8 page case study paper that describes a hypothetical person in two stages of life development. View the person as a hypothetical client if you are studying Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) or Addictions or as a participant in a longitudinal research study if you are studying General Psychology. The goal of this paper is for you to present a developmental profile of a person in two consecutive stages of life (e.g., early and middle childhood) explaining their individual growth using biological, social, psychosocial, cognitive, and environmental theories. Select developmental periods that interest you and that correspond to your future career plans. For example, if you are studying to be an addictions specialist and want to work with adolescents, you might select adolescence and early adulthood. Customize your project to your specific interests.

To submit your paper, DO NOT SUBMIT THIS ASSIGNMENT TO THE DROPBOX. Place this assignment on the portfolio website as instructed in the “MSP Portfolio” tab in the Course Home.

To begin, select the scenario that corresponds to your concentration track, and then, choose two successive developmental stages. Create an outline of the client’s different developmental features during each of the developmental periods. Write a paper that follows the sample case study format (see below the scenarios). You must use at least five primary source references that are from peer-reviewed journals and the class text.

Applied Behavioral Analysis

Client: Jackson

Age range: you decide- example early adulthood (20-40 yrs.) to middle adulthood (40-60 yrs.).

Jackson has developed phobias over the last few years, specifically to spiders, heights, and germs. He (or his parents if you make him a child) is uncertain as to when they began or how. However, the fear is debilitating and prevents him from being able to function in his life.

Questions to use to guide your response:

  1. What are the main features of Jackson’s cognitive, social, biological, and psychosocial development during two developmental periods? Explain the ones that are relevant to your proposed therapy interventions.
  2. Which therapeutic interventions would you suggest for helping him to reduce the fear? (Hint: Again, consider his developmental period in order to create appropriate interventions.)
  3. Predict some developmental issues that might contribute to the phobias or
  4. prevent treatment from working.

Addictions

Client: Michelle

Age range: you decide- example early adulthood (20-40 yrs.) to middle adulthood (40-60 yrs.).

Michelle has been referred to you because she was arrested last week for possession of heroin with intent to distribute. She also tested positive for heroin and marijuana adding to her charges. She has no history of prior treatment and is unwilling to enter treatment now, though she was court ordered.

Questions to use to guide your response:

  1. What are the main features of Michelle’s cognitive, social, biological, and psychosocial development during two developmental periods? Explain the ones that are relevant to your proposed therapy interventions.
  2. Propose some developmentally appropriate interventions that could be used to help Michelle to reduce her cravings.
  3. Predict some developmental issues that might contribute to the addiction problems or prevent treatment from working.

General Psychology

Participant: Patrick

Age range: you decide- example adolescence (12-17 yrs.) to early adulthood (20-40 yrs.).

You are studying the development of people who lived in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. Your participants lost everything, including at least one close family member. Your particular interest is in studying issues faced by them (including possible developmental problems) related to moving away from New Orleans, loss of house, loss of a family member, and change in economic status. To study these effects, you are conducting a longitudinal study using the same population, interviewed annually over many years to collect data. The main interest is in gathering data related to the specific effects of experiencing a disaster on social, biological, psychological, psychosocial, and cognitive development of different-aged people.

Patrick is one of your subjects who was forced to live in Texas temporarily and then moved to New Jersey before returning to New Orleans three years later.

Questions to guide your response:

  1. What are the main features of Patrick’s cognitive, social, biological, emotional, and psychosocial development during two developmental periods? Hypothesize the reasons for any developmental problems that you find.
  2. Predict the results of your findings for people in the two developmental periods and suggest interventions or strategies for reducing the effects of exposure to disasters.
  3. Propose further studies that could be created to explore your predicted findings.

Case Study Suggested Format and Strategies

Research

Begin by selecting two developmental periods (remember that they need to be consecutive) and research the typical expectations for cognitive, social, moral, and biological development. Then conduct research using a peer- reviewed journal such as Developmental Psychology or Child Development to determine what kinds of developmental problems might arise in your chosen scenario.

Use that research and knowledge of developmental theory to create your hypothetical client/participant case study.

Writing Case Studies

  1. Introduction: Describe the problems to be solved including specific information about the client/participant. Be clear in explaining the exact problem(s) or research question(s) so that your reader will be able to understand the rest of the case study.
  2. Background: In this section, describe in detail the specific developmental issues and pertinent background that would help to explain why the client/participant is experiencing problems in the present. Typically, this section includes the age the problem started and any specific information from the past that relates to the current problems (e.g., child of an alcoholic).
  3. Current State: In this section, explain the client/participant’s strategies for handling the problem(s). Explain the client/participant’s current developmental stages, making sure that you only focus on those that apply to the problem. For example, if your client is being treated for a cognitive problem, you wouldn’t explain his or her social development in great detail, unless it is relevant to the problem.
  4. Suggested Interventions: In this section, explain how the client/participant might benefit from specific treatments or interventions. Remember to use peer reviewed research to support your ideas.
  5. Conclusion: Provide a brief re-statement of the problem and ideas for future study to help others who have the same problems.

Select an organization, research and write a paper

With instructor approval, students will select an organization that either has or is experiencing challenges with its compensation and benefit system.  The student will provided a brief historical view of the organization, an assessment of their current challenge, a review of other organizations who had a similar situation and the strategy they devised to address the issue, theories and strategies that should be contemplated to address the situation and, finally, a recommendation to management on how to address/resolve the situation.  Importantly, the student should ensure any recommendations are based on solid research and analysis and reflect a comprehensive solution to the problem.

The research paper should integrate items discussed in class, textbook material, and additional information gathered from secondary or primary sources.  A minimum of eight credible sources (other than the course textbook) should be used to develop your final project paper.  Research topics must be reviewed in advance with the instructor.

Writing the Compensation and Benefits PaperThese papers are to reflect the current “state of the art” in the area and should reflect both academic and professional (practical) orientations. Your final paper should be eight- to ten- double-spaced pages in length (exclusive of Appendix, References, Exhibits, etc.) and formatted according to APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide. This final paper should review the available research, discuss the implications of that research for the topic area, and provide conclusions. The paper should be organized into the following areas:

Introduction: The area of research should be described and the purpose of the research. That is, describe the topic area in terms of (1) its relationship the topic and (2) what you want to be able to contribute to the training literature by writing this paper. Your introduction must include a succinct thesis statement. Review of the literature: Organize the literature into logical streams of thought related to your topic area. Within each of these areas summarize what the literature has to say. Be sure to indicate in your discussion whether the information is based on empirical data or analysis of the author. Implications of the literature: Again, organize the implications of the literature in a manner that logically builds the case for your conclusions (which you will present in the next section). For each of your implications be sure to reference the literature related to that implication. Be sure to indicate whether the implication is one that has already been made in the literature or if this is one that is original to you through your own analysis. You should identify in this section important areas related to your topic that are missing from the literature. As appropriate within a business report, it is important to use section headings to organize your key points.  Conclusions: This is where you tie all the pieces together. Make sure your conclusions are organized in a logical order that synthesizes your major points relative to the purpose of your paper. Be sure that your conclusions are justified and have credible support.  Inspire your audience to think about the practical application of your topic.  Remember, this is the last thing you are leaving with your reader so make the context of your message clear, communicate the impact of your topic, and leave a lasting impression.

Remember, your paper:

Must include a title page according to APA style. Must include an introductory paragraph with a succinct thesis statement. Must address the topic of the paper with critical thought and analysis. Must include section headings to organize your key points clearly. Must include citations to references that support the assertions made and facts presented in the paper. Must conclude a conclusion paragraph that ties directly back to your thesis statement. Must use APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide to document all sources. Must include, on the final page, a Reference List that is completed according to APA style as outlined in the approved APA style guide.

Disaster Recovery Plan Paper

Assignment Content

  1. It is important to note that IT is not just susceptible to man-made threats but also natural hazards and disasters. Organizations need to be prepared.

You have been asked by the IT Manager of the small company you work for to create a Disaster Recovery Plan template that will be used when disasters occur.

Create a Disaster Recovery Plan template for your company using the “Disaster Recovery Plan Outline” in the “Simple Disaster Recovery Plan” section in Ch. 10, “Planning for Contingencies,” of
Management of Information Security as an example. Include a 1-page summary that covers what options should be used to prevent data loss or restore corrupted data. Also, identify the prominent security standards, organizations, and relevant certification that will be needed.

A few months later it is tornado season, and your manager has asked you to fill out a Disaster Recovery Plan for the company.

Use the Disaster Recovery Plan template to assess the information technology infrastructure of your organization and identify the procedures needed in the event a tornado actually causes damage to the organization.
