Psychology  mat dis 1

due march 3rdWelcome to Mental Health Law! This course covers many aspects of psychology and the law, including the landmark cases in such topics as the right to treatment, involuntary commitment, the standards for finding criminal responsibility (insanity). competency to stand trial, death penalty mitigation, and much more.Sometimes the roles of psychologists, sometimes as scientists, clinical practitioners, expert witnesses, or public policy advocates, are very controversial in the public arena. The legal system is one arena where psychologists sometimes play a very public, highly visible role. Perhaps you can recall wondering what the psychological testimony might reveal in famous or horrifing cases, such as Andrea Yates, or Jeffrey Dahmer. At times the public outcry is so significant after a high-profile court case that changes are made in the laws, as happened after John Hinckley’s trial for the shooting of President Ronald Reagan. We will study the origins of law and conflicts between psychological and legal approaches to some of the same problems or events.Choose one of the following dilemmas and outline the argument for each of the opposing positions. Support your argument with reference(s) to articles from current peer-reviewed journals. References to laws and legal journals are also acceptable, if properly cited. You may cite the text, being certain to indicate when you have created a secondary citation.Choose one:·  Kansas v. Hendricks·  Therapist testimony on behalf of clients – is the therapist an expert? Why or why not?·  Regulation of public smoking·  Mandatory sentencing versus judicial discretion.Your post should convey both sides of the argument clearly and dispassionately. Try to write it in such a way that we, your readers, cannot guess which side you favor.Greene, E., & Heilbrun, K. (2019). Wrightsman’spsychology and the legal system (9th ed.). Discussion: Sampling and Collecting Quantitative and Qualitative DataIt is often not possible or practical to study an entire population, so researchers draw samples from which they make inferences about a population of interest. In quantitative research, where generalization to a population is typically valued, a researcher’s ability to make such inferences is only as good as the sampling strategy she or he uses to obtain the sample. Once an appropriate sample has been obtained, data collection should involve valid and reliable measures to ensure confidence in the results, as well as the ability to generalize the research outcomes. Although generalization is typically not a goal in qualitative research, sampling is just as important in qualitative and mixed methods research, as is obtaining reliable and valid results. Indeed, for quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods research, sampling strategies and accurate data collection methods are critical aspects of the research process.Specific methods of data collection (e.g., surveys, interviews, observations) produce specific types of data that will answer particular research questions, but not others; so here too, as covered in previous weeks, the research questions inform how the data will be obtained.  Furthermore, the method used to collect the data may impact the reliability and the validity of that data. For this Discussion, you will first consider sampling strategies. Then, you will turn your attention to data collection methods, including their strengths, limitations, and ethical implications. Last, you will consider measurement reliability and validity in the context of your discipline. With these thoughts in mind, if your last name starts with A through L, use Position A. If your last name starts with M through Z, use Position B.Position A: Probability sampling represents the best strategy for selecting research participants.Position B: Nonprobability (or purposive) sampling represents the best strategy for selecting research participants.By Day 4Post a restatement of your assigned position on sampling strategies. Defend your position with examples and support from the scholarly literature. Next, select a data collection method and briefly explain its strengths and limitations. Then, identify a potential ethical issue with this method and describe a strategy to address it. Last, explain the relationship between measurement reliability and measurement validity using an example from your discipline.Resources for this week’s assignment; Teddlie, C., & Yu, F. (2007). Psychology  Organizational Culture and Change Management

1. Since change in the workplace is constant, a good leader knows how to implement and lead effective change. A description on p. 418 and 419 explains how change affects top management, middle management, and frontline employees. Read this section, and consider a time when you experienced change in your organization.Describe how people at those three levels in the organization initiated or responded to the change. Did top management help his or her middle managers prepare employees for and implement the change? Did management understand the “losses” experienced by employees? Were employees resistant to the change? How did management overcome that resistance?2. What is burnout? Who gets burned-out?Read the stories about Joe in “We Buried Joe Today” and the “A tragic story” about ambulance attendants on pages 432 and 433. Comment on the stories and similar ones you may have heard about.
