Psychology  wk 4 DB 2 Response

When people meet acquaintances for the first time, they form subconscious judgments and assumptions that determine their future relationships. Thus, future relationships are formed based on the beliefs developed when we meet people for the first time (Aronson et al., (2019). For instance, if we believe that the person is friendly and good, we establish a close relationship and get more involved. The behavior that we hold towards new acquaintances is founded on our expectations. Nonetheless, the other person also becomes friendly with us when we demonstrate a close association with them. On the other hand, when we believe that our new acquaintance is rude, the behaviors align with the belief, resulting in a negative association. Thus, it can be concluded that a self-fulfilling prophecy is manifested when the beliefs and expectations of other people influence our behavior (Madon et al., 2018).The concept of self-fulfilling prophecy is essential in academic performance, career development, and behavioral formation in relationships (Madon et al., 2018). For instance, our expectations influence how we study and score in exams. Besides, it also determines how we perform in our careers. When there are no rewards for excellent performance in my department, my performance would be low. In my relationship, what I think of my partner affects how I relate to him or her. For example, if I know that my partner is about to dump me, I would be cruel and behave in an undesirable way since I know that they will leave me anyway. Human behavior aligns with a set of beliefs, assumptions, and expectations that determines our behavior.References:Aronson, E., Wilson, T. D., Akert, R. M., & Sommers, S. R. (Eds.). (2019). Psychology  discussion

watch the video “I am my Connectome (Links to an external site.)” By Sebastian Seung.Video Description: Sebastian Seung is mapping a massively ambitious new model of the brain that focuses on the connections between each neuron. He calls it our “connectome,” and it’s as individual as our genome — and understanding it could open a new way to understand our brains and our minds.Discussion Directions: In your response, discuss your thoughts on what Seung is describing. Summarize his key points. What are strengths/limitations of his findings? How do you feel about his statements? Do you agree or disagree with his view?Note: Your initial post must be at least 300 words in length. Post must be several sentences in length to be considered for credit. Support your points with information from the textbook or external educational sources. Be sure to cite your sources in APA formatting.———————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————-Please watch the video titled:You can grow new brain cells, here’s how (Links to an external site.)Video Description: Can we, as adults, grow new neurons? Neuroscientist Sandrine Thuret says that we can, and she offers research and practical advice on how we can help our brains better perform neurogenesis—improving mood, increasing memory formation and preventing the decline associated with aging along the way.Discussion Directions: After reviewing the reading materials for the week and viewing our TedTalk on neurogenesis, what are your thoughts on the concepts presented by the speaker? What do you presently do that fosters neurogenesis for you? What are some things you or your loved ones might have to change to increased the rate at which neurogenesis takes place for you?Note: Your initial post must be at least 300 words in length. By using the 95% confidence level, it can be said that 95% of the data will fall between +/- 1.96 standard deviation of the mean. Andby using the 99% confidence level, it can said that 99% of the data will fall between +/- 2.58 standard deviation of the mean (Frankfort-Nachmias, Leon-Guerrero, & Davis, 2020). For example, in the above data, it can be said that 95% of the responses from 100 people ratingtheir trust in the government will fall between 8.78 and 10.16.When comparing intervals of 95% and 99%, the Estimated Standard Error of the Mean is lower for the 95% confidence level andhigher for the 99% confidence level. When looking at sample size and how that impacts the confidence interval, it can be noted that theintervals are more spread apart with lower sample size and more closely together in a larger sample size.I think that confidence intervals can be pretty effective. However, the saying “take it with a grain of salt” can also be beneficial here.Confidence intervals predict the 95% and 99%probability of a score being between two scores, but it doesn’t account for all scores. However, since the percentages are high, they can be effective.ReferencesFrankfort-Nachmias, C., Leon-Guerrero, A., & Davis, G. (2020). Social statistics for a diverse society (9th ed.). Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publications.

Psychology  Week 3 Discussion 1&2

Discussion 1Measurement ScalesConducting psychological research generally involves collecting a large amount of data. In order to summarize and draw conclusions about the data, we must first have some knowledge about the various statistical concepts. Descriptive statistics and inferential statistics are what we use to describe or summarize the data and make conclusions and predictions about a population. How variables are defined and measured is critically important in order to evaluate the validity of the research.Instructions:Provide one example (your own) of each measurement scale, and provide an example (your own) of how a variable might be measured by different scales.Explain which of these you found most challenging to identify and why.Your post should be at least 300 words. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings. Consider in your response whether you think the example provided is accurate and why. Seek out peers who shared similar examples as your own, as well as those who shared different examples from your own. Compare and contrast your rationale for your choices.Discussion 2Hypothesis TestingHypothesis testing is a method for testing a prediction or hypothesis about a measurable variable in a population. Hypothesis testing involves five steps including: stating the hypotheses, collecting data, calculating the statistics, comparing the statistical findings with a critical value, and making a decision to accept or reject the null hypothesis.Instructions:Present a research topic and research question you are interested in studying and develop a null hypothesis and alternative hypothesis to answer the research question.Discuss whether your alternative hypothesis is directional or non-directional.What would be a type 1 error and type 2 error in the examples you provided? Explain how both of these could be minimized in your example. What do you consider to be the most challenging aspect of defining hypotheses and why?Your post should be at least 300 words. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ postings. As you respond, consider whether you can offer additional ideas for how to reduce type 1 and type 2 errors. Given your classmates’ examples, are there ways to adapt them to be directional or non-directional and vice versa? Are there suggestions you can offer on clarifying the hypothesis?

Psychology  Discussion: Ethics in Cross-Cultural Research

Please read instructions carefullyEthics are a critical and essential element of psychology. Psychologists must follow all appropriate laws and policies of their organization, locality, state, nation, and professional group. Additional ethical issues are often posed when conducting research cross-culturally, such as new or different issues regarding power and privilege, and factors involving different ideas and beliefs about gender, age, status, religion, and so on. Great skill and a delicate touch are often required to be certain each person appropriately follow all ethical considerations to the satisfaction of all involved, yet achieving this goal is essential to ensure a high standard of research as well as a high standard of behavior. For this week, you will examine ethical issues related to cross-cultural research and the necessary course of action. You also will examine ethical dilemmas that you might encounter related to your own personal culture and point-of-view. In addition, you will finalize your Module 4 Assessment for final submission. While many psychologists may be familiar with ethical considerations in their own culture, such as the use of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) to review research, or the existence of professional documents such as American Psychological Association’s (APA) code of ethics, when conducting research outside of their majority home culture, they may be at a loss. For instance, the psychologist may not be aware of different rules and regulations for research in different nations, or about various spoken and unspoken cultural beliefs about morals and ethics and the role and purpose of research, such as differing understandings and beliefs about what merits co-authorship or what constitutes privacy and confidentiality. Familiarizing yourself with such ethical considerations will be important for you to understand in your future professional practice.Examine ethical issues related to cross-cultural research and the necessary course of action.Consider the following:Professor Plum wants to investigate cross-cultural differences in attitudes towards different foods. He is very interested in nation “X”. However, he has never been there nor does he know the language or culture or the political situation. He also does not know if there are any psychologists living in that nation. Understanding attitudes about foods in this nation may help with people with eating disorders in Professor Plum’s country and eventually may help people with eating disorders in many nations. As you consider Professor Plum’s research, think about the impact of his plans on human subject protection. Also, consider the ethical implications of the aims of his research purposes and his ability to gain information that will accurately represent those from whom he collects data. Before Professor Plum begins his research, post and explain some of the potential ethical issues he will need to consider (i.e., impact on human subject protection) and why this is an important consideration.  Further explain two ethical issues and suggest what courses of action might be appropriate.Note: Be sure to support your postings and responses with specific references to the Learning Resources and identify current relevant literature to support your work.

Psychology  articles

Of major concern to educators and psychologists alike is the relationship of childhood poverty and deprivation on suppressed cognitive development, executive functioning, and attention. Further, recent research suggests that childhood poverty also can play an important role in negative health outcomes and attitudes towards aging that extend into adulthood. Discuss the research of this topic and suggest effective interventions for using childhood as a springboard for promoting healthy aging.Wise, P. (2016).  Child poverty and the promise of human capacity: Childhood as a foundation for healthy aging.  Academic Pediatrics (16), S37-S45. http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.acap.2016.01.014Follow APA guidelines for the writing style, spelling and grammar, and citation of sources.
