The Future of the Internet As the internet continues to evolve, some major changes to how we use it and what it will look like are set to occur over the next few decades, what are these changes and how will they affect how we use the internet? For your initial post (FPM6a 3%): After you have viewed the videos, think about how digital media broadly and the internet specifically, will continual to evolve over the next decade. 1) Select and discuss one innovation predicted for the future, or an aspect of The Internet of Things (IoT)* that you find either very appealing (noted from the videos) and would likely incorporate into your life, OR something that is particularly alarming or concerning for you if it were to be incorporated into your life. 2) Consider the implications (positive/negative) of this future innovation or this aspect The Internet of Things (IoT) that you have chosen on you personally in the future – and on our society and culture broadly. *The Wikipedia entry for IoT offers additional examples: home, manufacturing, agriculture, energy management, elder care, medical and healthcare, and so forth. In your response (FPM6b 2%) to another student: (This is student essay need to reply it) After watching the videos provided, I have found it to be interesting to consider how much the car industry has changed, and how much it will continue to progress in the years to come. The video “Watch your day in 2020” was incredible to me, as the video was published in 2011, and as a society I believe that many of these ‘future technologies’ will be accessible in the next two years. Personally, I took an interest in the display screen in the car. This fully accessible screen that lights up once you take a seat is an interesting development to me, as distracted driving has become a large issue lately. I believe that this development would be immensely well selling, although I am hesitant to say that it is a ‘safe’ design. The amount of focus that if required of the driver to correctly select the buttons on the screen, or to program the maps (as shown in the video) is large. However, it is likely that I would try to incorporate a vehicle like this into my life due to the unique features, as it is something new to the car market. If this does become a functioning design in society within the next couple years, I believe that there will be both positive and negative implications. Personally, I believe that the car will have a positive impact on the lives of those driving the car, as they will feel ‘cool’ that they have the newest technologies available to them. Further, I believe that the release of a car with these technologies will help the car industry thrive for a while once again, as it has declined within the last while. Additionally, I believe that this design could make the controls easier for those who prefer to speak to their car as a command, rather than manually change the radio, for example. However, as I mentioned, I believe that the car may lead to more distracted drivers on the road as they must first learn how to operate the system. Further, I believe that this design may further lead to a society that is even more focused on items and belongings rather than experiences (although one could argue that this car would be an experience itself). Additionally, the cost to fix the device may be large, and this could have an impact on the financial stability of the owner. Personally, I would like to see a car with these technologies come onto the market, as I believe it is a highly complicated device to make, and it would be interesting to control and operate a car such as this one. Forum Participation (FP) 30% Each of the six Modules for this course has a Forum Participation for the students to engage in. The Forum Participation are valued at 5% each, in which the student has two tasks to complete: Task One is to respond to the question or statement provided by the Instructor = 3%; Task Two is to respond thoughtfully to another student in your forum group = 2%. The online discussion forums are collaborative spaces of learning. These are spaces where ideas and experiences are shared and in confidence. When we enter into dialogue with one another and in these spaces, we do so with sensitivity and mutual respect. Disruptive behaviour will not be tolerated. The Forum Participation for each Module will be posted to Sakai on the first day of the Module, which is always a Monday. To earn 5% each module you are required to complete two tasks: 1. Respond to the module question or statement in 400 words minimum. Responses that fall short of the required word length will not receive full marks (3%). 2. Respond to a group member’s post. Responses must be written in full sentences, and at least 200 words. One word replies are insufficient (2%). Please see the “Forums” tab in Sakai to access the forums. To respond to another student’s commentary click “Reply” under their post. As long as you’re following the above guidelines, then you’re earning the marks without question. The parameters around the discussion forums are non-negotiable. It is your responsibility to ensure that you participate in the monthly discussion forums and in accordance to the guidelines (i.e. minimum word length, responding to the question or statement posed by the Instructor, and responding to a group member). Familiarize yourself with the discussion forum schedule. Once a forum closes, the opportunity to participate is lost. No exceptions will be made. Do not attempt to email responses to the forum questions to the instructor or to a TA: any attempts to do so will receive a grade of zero. It is advised that you keep copies of your forum postings in a word document, should anything go awry with Sakai.
